Choosing Your Physiotherapist

You as patient have a right to choose the most appropriate health care professional to meet your goals. The Indian Association of physiotherapists (IAP) or state council like Maharashtra State OT PT council (MSOTPT), Delhi council, Gujarat Council etc has provided guidelines for choosing a physiotherapist for your care.

Freedom of Choice

You have the freedom to choose your own physiotherapist. All over India, there is a direct approach which is available.


Physiotherapist should be the member of governing council or association in their respective states and are in 8 specialties like: orthopedics, sports, geriatrics, pediatrics, cardiopulmonary, neurology, women's health, and clinical electrophysiology.

Your Ideal First Visit

Your first visit should include an evaluation by the physiotherapist. Your physiotherapist will perform avarious examination to identify current and potential problems. Based on the results of the examination, and considering your specific goals, your physio will design a plan of care to include specific interventions and will propose a timetable to achieve these goals and optimize your movement and function. You as patient have right to ask about your diagnosis. You should feel comfortable asking your physiotherapist any questions regarding your course of care, including specifics regarding interventions and expectations.

  • All Physiotherapists should be aware about Doctor’s Protection Act.
  • Any damage or act of violence against Medicare professionals is an act punishable by law. Medicare professionals include (Doctors, nurses, paramedics, medical students, hospital attendants/staff)
  • Any damage to the property or the Institution of Medicare service is prohibited. Destruction of hospital beds, burning of ambulances, smashing medical stores is punishable by law
  • Imprisonment to lawbreakers for a minimum period of 3 years and fine amount of INR 50,000 to be imposed if found guilty.
  • Offenders of medical professionals/medical colleges can be cognizable or non-cognizable crime depending upon the offences committed.
  • Damage to any medical devices and equipments is a punishable offence and the offenders are liable to pay twice the amount of the damaged equipment’s cost.

Other details that physiotherapists need to be aware of.

  • All the physiotherapist have right to reject or accept the patient
  • Always have consent form signed specially for chronically debilitated patients.
  • If patient demands gender preferences, that should be fulfilled. If patient is fine with opposite gender examining the patient or doing treatment the nurse or supportive person or patient’s family member should present during examination or treatment. This should be recorded on examination sheet and signature should be taken from Patient as well as accompanying person.
  • All the patients should be registered, and important data like Name, Contact detail with their assessment chart should be signed by Doctor and Patient to avoid any future conflict.
